The purpose of the Adult Counseling Program at South Suburban Family Shelter is to provide adult victims of domestic violence with information and the skills that they need to recover from domestic violence. In individual counseling the SSFS staff help women become empowered so they can make their own decisions. Victims can also learn about breaking the cycle of violence, receive assertiveness training and build healthy relationships. Through group support, victims begin to feel they are not alone and learn to build their confidence.
The purpose of the Counseling Program for Child Victims/Witnesses is to provide children with the advocacy, support and skills that they need to recover from witnessing domestic violence. Counseling is crucial for any child who has lived in a domestic violence situation.
Current counseling clients may also receive case management through Project R.E.N.E.W (Recognizing the Economic Need to Empower Women). This program provides education concerning economics, career, housing and immigration issues.
